In a special edition of Timeout! with Tricky, 2015 FFI: ALPHA Super Bowl winner Styles412 sits down for a quick discussion on his playoff performance, and how it feels to capture his first league championship in his Madden career. Please take some time and vote for who Tricky should interview next HERE.
Tricky: So Styles, thanks for taking a few for this special edition of Timeout!. I promise to keep this short (no pun intended). Congrats on winning the Super Bowl, how does it feel to be a champion of FFI?
Styles412: Feels pretty good. I typically make it a few rounds in the playoffs in all myleagues, but have never won the big game before. I knew I had a chance, but wasn't expecting to win for sure. All of my games in the playoffs were great games and decided by 6 points or less. Happy to be the champ, but ready to defend the title.
Tricky: Well you definitely had a performance for the record books. That long TD pass to win the game against the Bills in the Wild Card Round definitely sticks out. Without that play you wouldn't be here. Did you think you had any shot to win that game before that fateful play?
Styles412: To be honest, no I didn't. 80 yards to go with no timeouts in 15 seconds, I think you maybe have a 5% chance to win that game. I was pretty close to just running it and giving up honestly, and if it was a regular season game, I might have done that. I knew he would think (Mike) Wallace was getting the ball, so I made sure to go to the opposite side to Marquise Lee. It was just a perfect throw by (Blake) Bortles. 90% luck, 10% skill. Just to be correct, it was the Divisional Round though.
Tricky: Oh my apologies. Well, obviously it wasn't all luck, you used a bit of strategy as well, so hats off to you. It'll definitely go down as one of the most memorable plays in FFI history.
Styles412: Only real strategy there was doing a touch lob pass. Other than that it was a play that I never tried before. My slot WR ran a post so I was hoping the deep safety would bite on that to give me 1-on-1 coverage with Lee. He didn't bite, but it did slow him up a bit I noticed when watching the replay.
Tricky: As they say, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. In your case, it was good to be both. Let's fast forwards to the Super Bowl. Going into that game both you and Mike were expressing a lot of doubt. Some have described it as the most nauseating bromance ever north of the Mason-Dixon line. Was it legit concern, mutual respect, or a reverse psychology routine to get your opponent to overlook you?
Styles412: Mix of the last two. I think I am confident enough in my game to know I have a solid chance against anyone I play. I do have respect for his game, and at the same time I was playing mind games with him. I think if Mike is honest, he will say he was doing the same.
Tricky: It made for great theatre, if not unsettled stomachs across the league. For those that didn't see, how'd you manage to win in overtime?
Styles412: My offense was stinking it up, so I put myself in a position where I had to punt the ball away with 2 minutes left and down 3 points. I was able to stop him 3 plays in a row and use my timeouts. Then I got the ball back and Lee came up with a huge play again to allow me to tie it up. In OT, Tre Mason finally broke a long run for me which led to a field goal. Mike then fumbled the kick return away and I was able to hold on for the win.
Tricky: Tre Mason will certainly be a folk hero in Jacksonville for a very long time. That was as exciting a Super Bowl as we could have asked for. There was one person who correctly predicted you to win it all, do you know who that is?
Styles412: What what I hear, you did? Thanks for the confidence.
Tricky: I don't wanna toot my own horn, but yes I did. Thanks for making me look smart. I gotta give Biggie credit too, he had it half right. He correctly predicted Mike to lose in the Super Bowl, my lets be honest, my dead grandma could have predicted that one. Well, that should wrap it up. I appreciate you taking some time on short notice. Well done, and best of luck to you on your quest to repeat.
Styles412: Thanks. Go Jags!
